Diapers represent a huge cost for low-income families. On average, a family has to spend $18 a week per child, or $936 a year, which represents 6 percent of a single mother’s gross pay who works a full-time minimum wage job. Cloth diapers, which can be reused, often don’t help because most day care centers won’t accept them and laundromats won’t let parents wash them. Food stamps and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits can’t be used for diapers, which get grouped with pet food, cigarettes, and alcohol. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or welfare, allows recipients to spend their benefits on diapers, but those benefits are incredibly meager and their value has been falling. Plus very few families even get them. There are less than 100 diaper banks in the country, centers that give poor mothers what they need.

I am not what you might call an “educated parent.” One of the nosy neighbor ladies nervously pointed out that wrapping my child in towels and old Slayer t-shirts is not the best way. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about these Pam-pers.

Dade County – Free diapers are given to Miami families and other low income parents in the county. Whether it is Pampers, Huggies, or cloth items, assistance is available. Find diaper programs in Miami.

“A day after my baby girl was born, I heard about Baby’s First Ride Home and was so excited because the timing was perfect,” said one Diapers.com customer. “It was probably the most special car ride I have ever taken, with both my girls next to me.”

A few months ago, one of our contributors shared her story of raising her son diaper-free. It’s a growing trend and it’s no wonder since the average family can save more than $2,100 going this route. Would you consider this?

Babies have to feed. And they feed a lot. As they start taking more and more bottles, it can be painful to watch those cans of formula get emptier and emptier faster than before. Don’t worry though! The following are several ways to save on formula and stretch those baby dollars:

I don’t think I ever preferred Huggies or Pampers over the other because for the first 6 months he was up for feedings every 3-4 hours and even more often early on. He was getting changed much more often because every time I fed him, I changed him. Now that he is sleeping through the night (SOME nights), I have noticed a difference for us.

His mother took the diaper-less tot to a tree in the yard, held him in a squatting position and made a gentle hissing sound — prompting the infant to relieve himself on cue before he rushed back to play.

Super disappointed. This was the only brand we have used since she came home from the hospital and have been very happy, but this last box must have a manufacturer defect or something. The diapers last 3-4 hours max, and at that point, the seam on the diaper opens and all of the absorbent gel falls out. Numerous times I have changed my daughter before her nap and when she wakes up and I pick her up the absorbent gel is just falling out of her pants leg! It’s a mess to clean up and very annoying. Will be moving away from this brand next purchase.

AGM is the absorbent gelling material widely used in diaper padding to absorb wetness. It is perfectly normal to see some gel on the skin from time to time, especially if the diaper is heavily saturated. It can easily be removed by wiping your baby’s skin. This material has a long history of safe use in a variety of products and has been in diapers for more than a decade. Absorbent gelling material is closely related to ingredients widely used in cosmetics and in food processing.

Pampers offers five different kinds of diapers in nine sizes, four kinds of toilet training pants, swim pants and four kinds of diaper wipes (Sensitive, Natural Clean, Baby Fresh Wipes, and Kandoo Flushable Toilet Wipes).

To all ladies who have commented and those just reading…emails and calling 1-800 numbers may only get you so far. I actually took time to write a formal letter to Johnson and Johnson as a class project in school and was sent all types of samples and a really nice letter in response. Try it old school and you may at least get a good coupon if not samples of many types. BUT, you have to be nice in your letter to them not acting as if you are owed something. Tell them you’ve used their products for years, or know of those who have and that you are interested in trying certain items, your due date….if they had promotional item(s) you could try. Boost their EGO and they might boost you with gear/samples. Just throwing it out there – Good luck!

They have a $1.50 off coupon, plus you can save 20% by joining Amazon Mom (it’s FREE) and doing the Subscribe & Save option! (Don’t worry about subscribing, you can get the discount and then cancel the subscription even just a couple days later if you wish!)

A lot of parents find themselves with a case or more of a certain size diaper after their baby hits an unexpected growth spurt. They may also have a stockpile of formula that their baby won’t eat, or that he has outgrown. As long as the cans are unopened and haven’t passed their expiration date, this is a good way to save money. Sometimes people will happily donate these for free just to keep them from going to waste.

  1. I’ve received 99% of my baby’s cloth diaper stash from good-hearted parents at Diaper Swappers. The site is a virtual garage sale where moms and dads put new and used cloth diapers and other mom & baby items up for sale. You simply log in and message the seller with questions and interest and pay via Paypal.  It’s simple. The site also offers forums for questions and answers about any and all cloth diaper topics, postpartum advice, and more. I used those forums before my first child was born to decide which types of diapers would best suit our lifestyle and how to launder them properly. Even if Diaper Swappers didn’t give me the chance to get free cloth diapers, it would still be my number one recommended resource to anyone considering using cloth diapers.
